Wednesday 21st January marks Big Adoption Day 2026, which sees voluntary adoption agencies (VAAs) from all across the UK come together to celebrate adoption.

Adopters for Adoption is proud to take part in this important event. Our doors are always open to potential adoptive parents who want to learn more about the positives of growing their families through adoption. As an agency set up by adopters, for adopters, we feel passionate about the work that we do.

What is Big Adoption Day?

The aim of Big Adoption Day is to see all VAAs collectively opening their doors to prospective adoptive parents to give them all the information they need if they’re considering growing their family though adoption. VAAs across the country hold both virtual and in person events in their area so that prospective adoptive parents can find out more if they’re curious about adoption.

There are nearly 3,000 children waiting to be adopted across the UK at the end of 2025, with almost half of them having to wait up to 18 months before they can find their forever home. Each and every one of these children deserve to have a loving home that potential adopters can provide for them. Could that person be you?

How does adoption help young people in need?

The role of an adoptive parent is a crucial part of giving these children brighter futures. As an adoptive parent you can offer them the stability, love, and understanding that they need to move forwards from their trauma.

VAAs collectively strive to offer a personalised adoption experience to those from all walks of life. Throughout our own 12-year history, 30% of AFA adopters have come from the LGBTQ+ community and 30% identify themselves as being from a non-white ethnic background.

What support can I get when adopting a child?

Adopters for Adoption are proud to offer our families lifelong support, which is designed to be flexible and responsive to give them what they need, when they need it. As a voluntary adoption agency set up by adopters, for adopters, we have a unique insight into adoption, placing adopters and adoptees at the heart of what we do.

Adopters for Adoption Head of Service Sally Heaven-Richards says: “Today on Big Adoption Day we are pleased to share and celebrate adopter and adoptee experiences within AFA and to celebrate the work we are proud to do as a team. Nearly 30 years after adopting my daughter, I highly recommend adoption as the most transformative and rewarding of experiences.

If you want to find out more about adoption and Adopters for Adoption, please join us on our next virtual information session where you can find out about adoption, hear directly from one of our adopters, and of course ask us questions. We have several virtual information events held throughout the year that you can come along to if you wanted to learn more about adoption and how this could change your life for the better. We hope to see you there!
