Why Self-Care Matters in Parenting
In the grey days of parenting, where the demands of family life can be overwhelming, self-care becomes a crucial practice. It is essential to prioritise your own mental and physical well-being to maintain a positive and effective parenting approach. For many parents, finding time for yourself can be a challenge as you juggle family and relationships with your home and work life.
It is very easy, as a parent or carer, to prioritise the needs of your family and others ahead of your own wellbeing. But taking time for yourself is not selfish.
Everybody needs space to unwind and relax, and giving yourself permission to recharge means you’ll have more energy and patience to meet the needs of your family.
Start small. Try giving yourself just 10 minutes each day to sit down, have a cup of tea, and take a breather.
At times, your ‘to-do list’ can quickly build up. This might include errands, shopping for essentials, or general admin. If these tasks are weighing on your mind, try writing them down and ticking them off as you go, prioritising what needs to be done that day or week.
Remember to include quality time with your children, as well as time for yourself. Seeing everything written down can make things feel more manageable and help you identify what isn’t truly urgent.
And most importantly, it’s okay to have a down day sometimes — it’s a normal and healthy part of life.

Practical Self-Care Strategies
Here are some other strategies to help you manage the challenges of parenting during these grey days:
Acknowledge the Hardship:
Recognise that parenting is one of the hardest jobs, and take time to give yourself grace for your efforts.
Prioritise Basic Needs:
Ensure you are getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and eating healthy meals to support your mental and physical health.
Practice Self-Care:
Engage in activities that make you feel good, such as meditation, exercise, or spending time with loved ones.
Seek Support:
Don’t hesitate to ask for help from family, friends, or professionals when needed.
Model Healthy Habits:
Demonstrate self-care by being present and engaged in your own life, showing your children that it’s important to take care of yourself. By incorporating these self-care practices into your routine, you can maintain a balanced and present approach to parenting, ensuring that you are well-equipped to support your children in their own journey.
