Safer, Stronger, Adoptive families (SSAF)
Adopters for Adoption (AfA) have secured a Department of Education grant for practice improvement within the Adoption arena which has enabled us to offer an exciting new project to Local Authorities, working with adoptive families who may be in crisis or at risk of disruption. We have been awarded the grant to undertake a twelve month pilot, to deliver the Safer, Stronger Families model adapted to meet the needs of families who have adopted previously and now find themselves in difficulty. The model is a combination of Triple P (teen), Team Parenting and Solution Focused Brief Therapy.
This systemic strengths-based approach seeks, through a dedicated staff team of Support Workers, supported by Social Workers, Therapists and Education Officers, to equip young people and their families with the skills and coping mechanisms to reduce the risk factors that lead to dysfunction and breakdown. The intervention is to be delivered at no cost to the partner authorities who chose to refer families to us within the course of the twelve month pilot. All of the resultant data collated will be evaluated by the Rees Centre, Oxford University, to produce evidential analysis of the benefit of using a non-therapeutic model of intensive, time limited family intervention to support such families. The criteria of assessment is that the family must have already been granted an adoption order in respect of their child and that the child is aged over 9 or 10 years old (school year 5). Families can be referred into the intervention up until their child reaches their eighteenth birthday. This intervention is grounded in a holistic approach and therefore the whole family will be included in the program. Our specially trained Family Support workers are able to work flexibly, visiting families in their own homes in the evenings and at weekends. We intend to be able to continue to offer this intervention once the pilot has established the benefits of using a non-therapeutic delivery to support adoptive families in crisis.
